Week 3
1. Why is the theory of evolution so important in understanding how human beings behave?
Charles Darwin was the man that theorized natural selection, this theory “states that the evolutionary change comes through the production of variation in each generation and differential survival of individuals with different combinations of these variable characters.” In the reading “The DNA of Consciousness” Darwin states that when DNA is copied there are variations or a mutation in the sequence. Darwin uses an example, say “ATGGRRRGATGTC is the original sequence but one might get ATGGTTGATTGTC while the level of script looks somewhat inconsequential, but in terms of applied to genetics such minor variations can loom large.” (3) It is understood that everyone is created by their parents genetics, as the offspring we are a mutation of the two different sets of chromosomes. Once we begin to understand that we are parts of our parents, then comes into play on how we were brought up. For example, take into consideration a set of siblings; most likely they were both raised in a similar manner. Although there may be an age gap the sibling’s parents influenced them both in similar ways, but for some reason the two siblings are completely different. For instance say both are female one is 16 and the other is 20 both siblings have similar facial and body structures, the personalities couldn’t be more different. The older siblings personality is calm, reserved, shy, and takes peoples feeling into consideration, while the younger sibling is loud, talkative, and could care less what people think. Even though these two grew up wit the same general up bringing they couldn’t be more different people. This is how we begin to understand how over the centuries humans have evolved. With genetic mutations and different living scenarios we adapt to our surroundings.
2. Which question do you think evolutionary theory cannot answer?
The evolutionary theory cannot answer is the how’s and the why’s that created people. How did the humane race began, how and why did we begin to evolve into a race where we question everything that is unfamiliar, or not normal. These are the missing pieces of a puzzle that scientist have yet to crack. Scientist have proven how one is born with a certain physical appearance but have yet to solve why, or what causes us to grow up to the people we do. Genetics from our parents determine what we may look like, but the question is why and how do we become the people we are today. In the beginning of time the human race was Neanderthals, over centuries we have evolved and adapt to the surroundings as they have changed over the centuries. Although the reason how we even got on this world and what created the world are still unknown just like how we have yet to figure out how the human race was created and how we become who we are.
