Week 2
1. Why is understanding physics and the general rules of the universe important in philosophy?
When I looked up the definition of philosophy it says “the study of fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.” Then I looked up the definition of physics, which is “ the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.” Physics helps provide a reason for why and how things work, it begins to broaden the way we think. By broadening the way we think we start to explore the world and the objects that it up. In “In the Universe Really Made of Tiny Rubber Bands?” a man named Richard Feynman was the first to develop an atomic bomb and when asked to explain how all the physics used worked he simply said “Things are made of littler things that jingle.” This begins to get the mind to wonder, how can everything that creates the world is made up of smaller things. When looking at a rubber band ball as stated in the book, by beginning to take apart the ball you begin to see the contents of the ball. Rubber band after rubber band, although once you have taken the ball completely apart you are left with multiple rubber bands, but take a closer look at the robber bands that once created the ball you find there is more to that ball then just rubber bands there are tiny thread like material. This rubber band ball that seemed to be composed of simply just rubber bands has proven to be a complex item. Physics gives us reason to question what makes up a single object and how was it created, broadening the way people view the world.
2. What is eliminative materialism?
The definition of eliminative materialism is “ the radical claim that our ordinary, commonsense understanding of the mind is deeply wrong and that some or all of the mental states posited by common-sense do not actually exist.” In the films “Elinative Materialism: God Did It?” they state that in order for the explain a phenomena we go through a process of elimination, going through sciences, mathematics and so on. Although after going through the process of elimination and the phenomena still cannot be explained then it is okay to believe that god did it. The speaker explains how over time we have eliminated the gods and prove our theories with mathematics and sciences.
