1. Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
A man named Meletus accused Socrates. Meletus was to accuse Socrates of creating false gods and deny the old gods, as well as corrupting the young people of Athens. As the trial commenced Socrates chose to defend himself, although failed due to lack of knowledge when it came to the courts politics and language. Socrates announced to the court that in the 70 years of living he not once had been to court of justice. In the end Socrates was to drink a poison called hemlock that would cause his death. Socrates was a man who stuck to what he believed through out the whole trail. I believe He was a man who believed in something and wanted to share it with people in his surroundings, not corrupt them and not deny the gods. Socrates had a different way of thinking which I believed scared Meletus just like how when something new happens or a different way of thinking arises the first reaction is to be afraid of it not embrace it, Socrates was just open minded and believed in what he thought which right or wrong his fate ended in death.
2. Why is there a conflict between science and religion?
In the reading “The Great Mystery” begins by bringing to the readers attention how everything is made of something smaller; i.e. atoms, neurons, electrons. We are face with the reality that every large mass is a greater production of the little things that are arranged a certain way to create a larger mass, fro example humans. In the reading “The Great Mystery” as well as in the assigned films it is repeated that ever mass is a larger creation of something smaller, and with every layer being pulled back there is more and more layers to that object. There are endless possibilities that could arise from each layer that is pulled back from a single object although science cannot prove it, there are scientist that believe that the layers go on although it cannot be proven. Then there is religion that people look to, in one of the films it is stated that once all the neurological possibilities are exhausted then people turn toward religion. This is where there is a conflict between matter and religion. Although religion cannot be proven there is a belief that is there that allows someone to believe with out credibility. Although when speaking about science there are theories that are just a persons perspective on what they believe that something could be, but it does not have to have a credible source similar to religion. Therefore it comes down to whether how things over time have been created whether by god or by something scientist believe created it needless to say either way there is only so much proof that is given to us.
