1) Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
As a philosopher, Socrates questioned the topics that weren’t allowed to be questioned. He was accused by Meletus, and many other believers from the city, of corrupting the youth by introducing new theories about Gods along with acts of piety that included “not acknowledging the Gods of the city” (18). Socrates was sentenced to execution by forced suicide of consumption of hemlock, a poisonous plant. As a teacher, Socrates was urging his students to discontinue the blind following of any subject, and have to discover their beliefs on their own.
2) Why is there a conflict between science and religion? Science is a study that revolves around evidence and proof to provide answers. For followers of most religions, their beliefs are often negated by facts that cannot be rationalized in a scientist's point of view. In the required reading, “The Great Mystery: Matter vs. Spirit”, the author describes the conflict as “the human mind has an almost innate difficulty in understanding quantum theory” (11). Firm believers in most religions struggle in allowing proof to disrupt the explanations that were found since the beginning of man.
