Essay questions
1. Why was Socrates setenced to death?
Socrates was sentenced to death because he was accused of not believing in the State recognized gods, and corrupting the youth of Athens through his teachings (2). Socrates did not deny or confess to the charges (2). Even though he was able to show that he did believe in the God the state recognized, the judges sentenced Socrates to death by ingestion of hemlock (2). Crito, a friend of Socrates, offered a means of escape to Socrates (3). However, Socrates argues it is wrong to do so and willingly accepts his fate (3). On the day of his scheduled suicide, he is surrounded by visitors, who Socrates engages in conversation until the effects of the hemlock poison slowly take away his life (3). He does not seem to fear his death but rather looks forward to a happier existence that lies after death (2). According to Socrates, since life and death are contrary to one another, they cannot coexist (3). Where there is life, which can be found in a human soul, there can never be death; making the human soul immortal (3).

2. Why is there a conflict between science and religion?
Science is rooted in facts. Science explains why certain people hear irritating high pitched sounds while others do not. Religion is the belief in a ethereal being that is the reason for our humanly existence. Science can explain what we are. "Things made of littler things that jiggle" (5). We are made of matter, which makes up everything else, that is reconfigured differently from the rest (5). Religion is why we are what we are. To some the answer is clear. For example, God created humans in his image. Those who have a disconnect between religion and science feel that science disregards Gods power. The idea of evolution goes against the bible, proving it wrong. Though being proven false is a necessary component in science, for religion it is blasphemous (14). Strong religious beliefs have a set way of understanding life and is reluctant to provide more than just that. Both religion and science are limited by what is unknown (8). The difference is how the two deal with this issue.

Matter is comprised of molecules, which are made of atoms that contain a nucleus and can be reduced even further(5). It seems that there is a never ending amount of layers found in matter which makes it impossible to have a definite knowledge of what makes matter (5). However, it exists. Matter makes up everything. The difference between my body and the cell phone I use, is the configurations of matter (5).
