1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
Artificial intelligence was a great breakthrough for us in the past and has been extremely helpful in many cases and extremely serious matters, such as of terrorism. But I think now it’s starting to cross some boundaries. We have iPhones which are basically able to track every move we make. As Professor Lane writes in “Digital Philosophy”, “Get ready to go on stage, the world’s stage, even if you don’t want to. Google Earth has already put your private backyard online for close-ups for the world to see.” (3) It’s great that we have Google Maps to guide us everywhere around the world, but maybe too much information is being released now. When you post a picture on Instagram, a person would be able to tell exactly where you uploaded that picture from, down to the street number. That can be helpful in catching a criminal, but it’s also kind of an invasion of privacy. The part in the quote “even if you don’t want to” is exactly what is happening in today. You will have to participate in this procedure, despite your personal view about it.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has definitely impacted my life in a good way and a bad way. I am glad that now I can reach all my friends around the world whenever I want to talk to them, whether it’s through Skype or Facebook. I am glad that I can put any address into my phone and get directions without any problem, because I have no sense of direction. I am glad that I can stay connected to those who are no longer physically living in the same city as me. I think I can still appreciate these advancements without letting them overpower me, but the future generation has lost meaning of life because of these advancements. It upsets me to see that kids are playing games on phones or gaming consoles, rather than riding their bikes out on the streets. It’s also kind of a bad thing that kids have so much information available to them on the internet. Knowledge is never a bad quality to have, but learning too much at an early age can also rid you of innocence. The next generation is letting technology take over their life.
