1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I definitely do see a huge problem in artificial intelligence for the future for if we can barely control other humans in society how is artificial intelligence going to fare up. It’s not really the nature of the stuff that mind is made up, it’s the organization and the way it’s set up, we call this Consciousness is substrate independent.” (Video: The complexity of Consciousness) Humans have a preconceived notion that we always want to feel the power of being a creator rather than the created and i feel like this thinking has haunted us for many years. As years pass we will see our lives change more and more and artificial intelligence will ever be more than our lives than before, for example “Google Glasses are the most talked about new gadget in the first part of 2013 and for good reason. They represent how intelligent devices are rapidly evolving to become embedded objects in our day to day lives.” Page 5 (Digital Philosophy)
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has impacted my life in numerous ways more than I can honestly think of, growing up in the early 2000’s there wasn't really as much technology as there is now. The only console i used and had was Nintendo 64 now there is over 8 where one can pick from. Technology was still booming, and this meant people spent more time in the parks, school, and doing religious practices. Going to the park I grew up in last week where kids were running rampant and the sound of the ice cream man coming in was one to this day i still think about. Now literally the park is abandoned nobody goes there anymore because you can just shut up a kid by putting a I pad in lap. Don't get me wrong technology can beautiful and extraordinary but we also have to remember where we came from and how hard it was because we are really not far from living like that. In the video zombie consciousness it talks about how we as humans can be zombie like once become so mindless with our daily tasks. This is why I am afraid if technology because it makes us mindless it makes us not think as hard as we used to for critical thinking now we have a gadget that can do all the work for us and this only means that we will get dumber and dumber.
Extra credit: Nicole post How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has impacted my life in many ways. To start, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my summer and get as much work done if I didn’t have a laptop and Internet to use. I am also highly dependent on my navigation system in my car because without it I wouldn’t be able to get around unless my dad was in the car telling me where to go. I am thankful for the amount of advanced technology I have in my life but at the same time I despise it. At times I wish I were able to have learned a lot of the things I know now without the use of technology. For example, driving around to new places, I am highly dependent on my navigation system and therefore don’t bother learning the street names or which freeway takes me to which place. If I were to learn how to get around to different places by pulling out a big paper map and committing to memory the freeways and big street names I would be able to get to more places without the use of my navigation system. Pulling out a big paper map and learning where to go may be more time consuming at one point but in the long run it would be more beneficial.
Extra Credit Response:
I too am thankful for the advanced technologies in my life for it has made it more easy on a daily basis which is great not only for me but the human race as a whole, but sometimes I think too much is technology is a bad thing for teaches people not to become self-independent but rather dependent on the technology at hand which is a bad thing. What if there was no more technology and we had to go back to ling the way our ancestors lived?

Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future? I think artificial intelligence can be a significant problem to us in the future. By far, technology has been more helpful than harmful to us. We have access to a wealth of information with devices such as the computer or the Iphone. Where we used to need access to the dictionary or the encyclopedia, we can now simply ask Google or Siri for the answers to questions. We have GPS rather than needing the Rand McNally. However, with the advancement of technology there is a threat of abuse of biotechnology. “The same technologies that are empowering us to reprogram biology away from cancer and heart disease could also be used by a bioterrorist to reprogram a biological virus to be more deadly or more communicable.” (Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity)
How has technology impacted your life? Technology has become a way of life, it is everything and everywhere. Everything we do and use is some form of technology. That being said, technology has impacted my life profoundly. My Iphone is my #1 source of communication with the world, whether it is by voice, text, email, facetime or the use of my calendar. It is also my source of direction by way of GPS. I am able to take this online course because of computers, my Iphone and/or my tablet. Everything I use in my house is impacted by technology; shower, microwave, air conditioning, refrigerator, etc. Every new advancement in technology will continue to impact all of our lives.

1. do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the fututre?
I think there will be a significant problem with artificial intelligence in the future. in the film global positioning intelligence, they had stated that in many instances, people cannot differentiate between a real clip/ photo or a digitally imaged one. I see a big problem with this. Due to technology increasing rapidly many people don"t have the proper knowledge of the products coming into availability. There is much controversy on the rapid development of technology, some see it as a negative thing that will eventually turn into a problem where others see it as positive. In the film the codex funeral it is stated that technology is a positive thing in many ways one being that the computer/ internet is always readily available for us to learn and all of this information is available in an instant where as books were a thing of the past and should stay because oof them being only on one subject each time. Although there is controversy on the subject I see it as both a positive and a negative. For some it as an easy way for them to find readily information that they dont have to actually know in detail because it is always there when needed. For others it is available and they can thrive on it and learn more within a shorter period of time. I think it depends on the extent of the artificial intellegince that weighs in on whether is it positive or negative.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has impacted my life in many ways. When I was younger having a computer in your home was the "norm". I had to go to the library to check out books and read it and check them back in. Now if there is a required reading or I need to find information on anything I have my computer that I can easily log onto to find the information I need. It has also been a contributing factor in me going to school. I am capapble of going to school along with working full-time because I have the opportunity to take my college courses online. It is an amazing thing being able to take a class online because of the new day and age of technology. Although it has greatly helped me, I fear that it has it's negative affects as well. Now when going out to dinner with my spouse or even my family I see many people on their phones instead of engaging one another. We have a strict no phones, tablets, ect. at the dinner table because it is very important that we can still engage in conversation. When spending quality time with my nephew, I like to go outside and play games where, he wants to play on the xbox or ps3 and play minecraft or capcom. I am not a fan of video games but I have to use the consoles in order to spend that time with my nephew making memories. I make it a point to avoid it as much as possible becuase I think being inside all day and playing games has a big impact on the person you become and I don't think people can be to social or make many friends if they are inside playing games all day and night.

1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
The significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future will all depend on how man as a whole decides to shape and wield it. Companies like Google, Dropbox, and Yahoo are all working on their own version of AI, and so are other companies around the world. To have a positive outcome regulations and standards will have to be put in place around the world, because if it is unmoderated a whole lot of trouble may ensue. Typically the government is slow when presiding over recent technological achievements. This is bad because that means humanity may already be behind and late for the future. To borrow from William Gibson's quote, “The future has already arrived. It's just not evenly distributed (Page 3).” The future may already be now. Now is the time we should be acting as one group, humanity. One side of the world may have regulations and restrictions on the extent their AI program might go, while another county. We don’t quite know the full extent of what an AI with self-governing function is capable of. We all know how the movie Terminator ends. AI has phenomenal uses but must be carefully handled throughout the human race.

2. How has technology impacted your life?
I didn’t grow up with a computer, tablet, or smart phone like many of today’s youth do. It wasn’t until I was about 14 that I was able to try out a computer. Fast forward to now and I cannot go a day without using some type of programed device. It’s an extension of your thought and an aid towards your advancement in the situation that you choose to be. With GPS we can drive to a location without the worry of getting lost and even find alternate route in traffic. With my iPhone I can figure out where I should eat and what is going around the world. I have gone a day here and there without my phone. I feel like I am cut off from civilization and no one will be able to know I even still exist. I even try contacting my close one to tell them I am unreachable at the moment. Today, we need iPads, and the like, to keep us in the flow of information and function normal life (Page 11). Simply put, like is easier with the aid of smart device. Our civilization has taken a leap with such advancements. Electrons is so integral to our lives that we even have a fear of losing electricity, getting hacked, or going a day without our devices.

Hello, I didn’t grow up with much technology when I was a kid either. I had to go to computer labs to type my reports when I was in high school. I remember going to Cal-Poly’s computer lab purchasing a card and using the computers there. I don’t remember using the internet then. I had to go to the library check out books and then do my reports. Today having the internet and laptops, tablets, and phones makes it so much easier to be able to get information for reports. I am grateful that technology has advanced the way it has or I would not be able to take online classes like I am now.

Week 5
Question #1
Artificial intelligence might just be the final frontier in technological advancements. First of all artificial intelligence is the ability of computer systems that will be able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. That means tasks such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages would now be accessible to computer programmed things. While many people might see artificial intelligence and nothing more than a technological milestone, I believe it will be a significant problem in the future. Like Stephen Hawking as stated, “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Hawking’s counterpart, Elon Musk shares the same feeling as Hawking when he stated that he believe the artificial intelligence is humanity's "biggest existential threat" and in addition, the human race needs to be super careful with artificial intelligence because it potentially could be more dangerous than “nukes” (nuclear power).Already the human race is increasingly becoming a lazy one. We have come to rely on technology more and more so much so that simple every day, mundane things we cannot no longer do on our own.
Question #2
As I stated in the first essay question, human beings have become more and more reliant on technology. While I cannot speak for every human around the world, I know that this is true for me. If someone was to ask me whether technology has impacted my life for the better or for the worse, I would answer for the better. But I am not sure how merit that holds in essence. I know it has made my life a lot easier. When I need to make certain calculations, I can grab a calculator or my cell phone and punch in the numbers. When I need to get from point A to point B I can just input the address in my handy dandy GPS and I’m on my way to go. When I’m feeling bored, I can read a novel on my kindle or put on a movie on my television. And pretty much the list is endless. But this means that I have become increasing dependent on technology and at times I feel like I cannot function. Lets say technology all of sudden ceases to exist as we know it, I believe I would have a hard time surviving in a technology-free world as well as many people in the world like many other people.

In real life thanks to the phones and recorders I was able to see my son take his first steps in video because it was recorded. I was at school when he took his first steps. If technology was not as advanced as it is I would not be able to do many things or see my children while I was away for school or work.

WEEK FIVE: Digital Philosophy
REQUIRED TWO ESSAY QUESTIONS: 1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
I believe that artificial intelligence is a great thing if used in moderation and with safety. We use the GPS to help us navigate through cities we don’t know. I have to drive my child to soccer meets every weekend and the GPS allows me to get to places I have not gone in the past. I remember years ago we I had to rely on the Thomas Guide which was a book filled with maps. The city the street had to be searched on one page then go to another page to find the destination and then the route had to be planned out. In the book “Digital Philosophy” the authors say: “Now imagine this: Place a nano-sized GPS device, augmented with a nano-sized web browser constantly connected to the net but personalized with updates about the person wearing the GPS, so that not only is the person being tracked but the person is also housing tremendous amounts of personal information or data about who they are” (12). This was just the beginning of the book and I had already come to the realization that we have this personal GPS with us at all times. These are our intelligent phones the iPhone, the android phones all of these new intelligent phones most people have. Some people do share more than they are supposed to on social media. Some people without realizing it put their children at risk. They post when they have dropped of a child at school, they the name and the city of the school. If the information is kept private and only shared with people that you know then you might be safe. There is also the unsafe side where people open up to the wrong people and have gotten hurt. I saw the news the other night and saw that a young girl had gone missing after going to meet in person with someone she had met on Facebook. I still think that artificial intelligence will not be a problem is used in moderation and with extra caution and moderation not putting everything out for the world to see. I don’t know what I would do I had to go back to the Thomas Guide for directions to a new city or address. It is so much easy just to put in the address of the place I want to go and have the GPS navigator guide me until I am at my destination.

2. How has technology impacted your life?
There are so many ways in which technology has impacted my life that I don’t even know where to start. I am so fortunate and happy for the internet, the wifi, YouTube and online classes. If the internet was not available I would not be able to take online classes. Just being able to go on YouTube and look for specific information for math or any other subject is great. I have even gone on YouTube to watch the videos that were assigned for this class we can find anything on YouTube. If technology had not advanced the way it has up until now we wouldn’t be able to get internet service in the home. When I am at work I also use technology for billing and for the transmission of claims online. I work in a dental office and I send the claims electronically online I have to transmit the claims and when a claim needs to have x-rays I send those via the NEA (National Electronic Attachment). When I started working in the dental office that was not an option then about 10 years ago the scanner that scanned transparencies came along. Then very first scanner that I had at work was huge and bulky. It work great and I was able to send my claims and x-rays because of this scanner. The scanner I have now is not that bid and is much easier to operate than the one I had 10 years ago. I can send all of these things because we have equipment and internet that is much faster than what was available a decade ago. Technology is improving immensely and I have witnessed it firsthand because of my work. I have also used technology to entertain my children while I do other things. I have a four year old son whom has used either an I pod and or a tablet since he was a year old. He used the tablet to get videos of numbers, music, letters or educational programs. I only let him use the devices for certain periods of times and I make sure he also had the physical activities that he needs. If we use technology in a positive way it can be a very positive thing and if we abuse it or use it in a bad way then it can become something that is not a positive thing. One very important thing to me is the digital books or the books we can get in PDF files. I can carry the books I have to read in my tablet. I find that carrying my books in my tablet allows me to read my books anywhere and at any time. When I was reading the book I noticed that it said that the books are dead. I don’t think that they are dead there is just a more convenient way to read our favorite books or books needed for school. In the book “Digital Philosophy” the authors say: No, the book died on January 27, 2010. This was when with much fanfare Steve Jobs announced that Apple was coming out with the iPad. At first the response to the touch tablet, which had been widely over typed in the months leading up to it, was somewhat critical because it lacked features that some prognosticators predicted were fundamental (such as a font and back camera, the ability to display flash video, and multitasking)”(20).

1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future? As Ray Kurzweil says in the film The Coming Singularity, the information technology glows exponentially, we may find it hard to believe the advance technologies decades later. I am always hold the opinions that technology, which is designed by human, can only be a tool for human being to extend our abilities. As long as technology cannot change the restriction that they can only follow the instruction given by human, they will not be out of control unless they are operated by evil mind, which is still not coming from the technology itself but human brain. However, Ray Kurzweil predicts that by 2029, the reversed engineered technology will be able to simulate all parts of human brain, which will enable a computer to combine "the subtlety and suppleness of human intelligence" and the "ways that machines already superior to us" as they can harness all human knowledge, remember billions of thing accurately, and share knowledge a million times faster than human language (The Coming Singularity). It raises my worries because I believe the flexibility of human brain is what makes human ultimately superior than a computer. But if a computer can also redesign and refine themselves, then it may cause a problem to human as they have more powerful computational ability than human. Imagine a human who can store infinite information and run at the speed of light, he/she will be able to defeat any human beings. However, the thing is at the process of developing a human like computer, we can still manipulate it to think in the way we want it to in order to make sure it does good to human. Though I have some worries about it, I am still optimistic about the future technology. 2. How has technology impacted your life? Technology has made a great influence on human lives, but the most important impact is that it change my life style. I remember when I was a kid, bookstore was the place where I spent most of my time while I was waiting for my mom to pick me up after school. At that time, no big screen phone or e-reader, the only thing I could do when I did not finish a comic book was to come back tomorrow. When I went to middle school, computer became a popular thing, where I can read a lot of comic book online. I could always finish what was left at home. Later on, during high school, my phone and tablet freed me from a computer screen. Instead, I could read and access to any information online anywhere. It changed the place and the way I read. But it also changed my life style. Now, besides school, almost all the information I learn about come from electronic product. I have got used to an instant access to any information online. Not just education, but literally anything, from food, to clothes, and to leisure. We have been surrounded by a giant cyber network created by these technologies. We cannot simply say the technology is good or bad, but one thing that can be sure of is that technology has integrated into our daily lives. Week 5Question #1 Artificial intelligence might just be the final frontier in technological advancements. Question #2 As I stated in the first essay question, human beings have become more and more reliant on technology. While I cannot speak for every human around the world, I know that this is true for me. If someone was to ask me whether technology has impacted my life for the better or for the worse, I would answer for the better. But I am not sure how merit that holds in essence. Lets say technology all of sudden ceases to exist as we know it, I believe I would have a hard time surviving in a technology-free world as well as many people in the world like many other people. Response: The first sentence of the essay already caught my attention as I never thought artificial intelligence would be the final frontier in technological advancements. I do believe that in order to achieve actual artificial intelligence, which means a computer has an independent thinking skill, a very advanced technology need to be applied to it. But is is necessary to be the final frontier of technology? If it is, then I can assume that the author has regarded human ourselves as the most advance "technology" in the world. However, there are two theories about relationship between human and nature. One may argue that human is insignificant comparing to the nature as human is like a infant while the nature may be a thousand year old tree. Our intelligence will be nothing in front of the universe. However, others may argue on the basis of computational equivalence, saying that the human brain may be just as sophisticated as the universe itself. If it is true, then reaching the same computational equivalence as human will be the limit of technology.

1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future? 2. How has technology impacted your life?
It is an undeniable fact that artificial intelligence could become a human race ending component in the future. However, “technology has always been a double-edged sword since fire and stone tools” and thus it would be inexcusable to simply excuse the possibility of danger in artificial intelligence. (Ray Kurzweil 5:49) The only reasonable approach towards the progress of artificial intelligence is one with a high sense of caution and reserve. There already exists programs that are capable of making and improving itself or a target program/product. Artificial intelligence will surely be a technological improvement that holds boundless possible benefits to society. However, artificial intelligence should still be treated with a certain amount of preemptive precautions. In this day and age, technology is found in essentially all aspects of modern day life. Due to the fact that I was born in the modern age, technology has essentially shaped many key components of my life. From a young age, technology had an influence on my morals and thoughts through television, music, and the kinds of food that is available due to technological advances. The nutrients consumed in my youth has dictated may chemical preferences within my biological body as well as partially determined to what extent my genes would allow the physical body as a whole to develop. Later on, technology empowered me to be able to converse with my friends even when we were in different rooms, cities, and even time zones. Technology has allowed me to explore my interests through the games I play, the videos I watch, and the music I listen to. All of these factors have influenced part of the identity that is my whole. I think it would be safe to say that technology is a very vital factor in who I am today.

1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future?
Yes, I do believe artificial intelligence will be a problem in the future. People are becoming more and more dependant on technology and artificial intelligence itself.
People are beginning to abandon old fashioned methods of interaction and problem solving for the advanced futuristic technology. “The book is dead” (MSAC 10). The physical book is starting to die, with people wanting to start saving paper and having their information on the go, “we are witnessing the funeral of the codex and the funeral pyre (...) we might at first imagine (10)”. We are beginning to rely on technology too much. Like the GPS, a prime example of artificial intelligence is a widely used device today. It shows us where to go when we don’t know and when uncertain, suggests where to go. Almost every smartphone has or is able to acquire a GPS, we are never not incapable of getting one when we have a smartphone in our possession. With such easy access to such a handy piece of technology, why wouldn’t they use it? To have a precise set of directions in thirty seconds or less sounds much favorable than to logging onto google maps and writing or printing out the directions themselves, or even reading a map. A GPS does the work for people, reads the maps, provides the directions and it even saves the trouble of picking up the device and reading the directions by just reading out the directions itself. Why make life harder by doing the latter? Eventually, people will rely too much on these devices like the GPS. What if the GPS stops working? What if our phones run out of battery? What if there’s no signal? What will we do then if we’re lost in an unknown new area? What would we do then? This issue is occurring right now. We rely too much on our devices that everyday ac Our technologies’ positives do outweigh the negatives. With our technology continuously advancing, it shows that our intelligence, artificial intelligence and reliance are expanding immensely.
2. How has technology impacted your life?
Technology has impacted my life greatly positively and negatively. I didn’t completely grow up with technology, but I was exposed to it enough to utilize it as much as I do now. I started to learn on the computer at an earlier age than most, from first writing my name when I was three years old, to learning to code my own programs and finally to taking online college classes at nineteen, technology has been and is one of the biggest aspects of my life. “The iPad is, as other commentators have mentioned, the Swiss Army Knife of Information.” (MSAC 11) The iPad and other devices similar to this one has become such a staple item in my life that it is my main solution to go to for many types of situations. When I need to read, my iPad or phone is there, when I need to look something up, when I’m bored, I can draw on my phone. Even when I'm feeling anxious, I can pull up a stress relieving game and calm myself. Not only just for utility purposes, I have also learned a lot, both skills and general information from the internet. The internet has become an infinite fountain of knowledge to me than I can have at a push of a button. Despite never completely having such technology as a kid, I use it to continue on with my life. The technology today has greatly affected the way I live from eating, sleeping and learning, the life I lead today is a lot different than the ones my parents had led when they were my age.

“The same technologies that are empowering us to reprogram biology away from cancer and heart disease could also be used by a bioterrorist to reprogram a biological virus to be more deadly or more communicable.” (Ray Kurzweil: The Coming Singularity) How has technology impacted your life? Technology has become a way of life, it is everything and everywhere. Everything we do and use is some form of technology. That being said, technology has impacted my life profoundly. My Iphone is my #1 source of communication with the world, whether it is by voice, text, email, facetime or the use of my calendar. It is also my source of direction by way of GPS. I am able to take this online course because of computers, my Iphone and/or my tablet. Everything I use in my house is impacted by technology; shower, microwave, air conditioning, refrigerator, etc. Every new advancement in technology will continue to impact all of our lives. EXTRA CREDIT RESPONSEI can definitely relate to your post. Almost everywhere I go, some technology is involved with it. My phone is also my number one source of communication, With it I am able to talk to my friends from California to Japan. It is impressive how much my small phone can do. Not only my phone for being the source of entertainment and social interactions, I also read from it. The way I live also involves modern technology that has affected my lifestyle greatly.

Week 5: 1) Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future? -I definitely do think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future. We currently already see some technological advancements that our causing problems. As Ray Kurzweil mentioned, the same bio-technologies that we use to today can be abused. The powers of these technological advancements are growing beyond our control and fast! We can see now days how fast this is growing first with all the apple technologies. From being able to "FaceTime" one another and having our phones know exactly where we are and location. From having this new technology of “Drones” being able to fly in the sky and having them record or take pictures of thing we can’t personally reach. In fact it is really scary when we come to think what our world and newer generations will come to. I see this as an ending to our society and having technology defeat us. 2) How has technology impacted your life? -Technology has immensely impacted my life. I hate to admit it, but I do believe I depend on it a lot. From getting me to places, to checking my calendar to what day it is and what I’m doing for that current day. I also need in to contact people but it’s not like before when I would call. Now it’s more of texting and social media. I don’t talk as much on the phone as I use to. My writing skills have also gotten worse due to everything has been made easy for me. From paying bills online and emailing and order things online I have less of a social life because like I said things have gotten way to easy. I do see that future generations will be impacted greatly by our growing world of technology.

Week 4: Neural Philosophy and Consciousness 1. Explain the virtual simulation theory of consciousness. The virtual simulation theory of consciousness is "simply put, the reality we experience is part and parcel a simulation and may or may not correlate (at differing times and differing places) with what we believe exists externally from ourselves" (Universe App, 106). So "consciousness is a virtual simulator, apparently evolved over eons of time to enable mammals with higher brain functions to 'in source' varying options of how to respond to a disparate array of problems before 'out sourcing' them" (107). Having this virtual simulation has helped us survive by allowing us to choose what we believe will bring out the best outcome according to our simulation "consciousness emerged as a virtual simulator to better map out future competitive strategies and thereby increase its survival rate" (cerebral mirage, 14). 2. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival?"Our brains evolved to neurally trick us so as to better help us make immediate judgments and future predictions in order to live an extra day" (Cerebral Mirage, 15). "The brain tricks us into believing something to be real when it is not, provided that such trickery provides with a survival advantage (18). "Our brains were designed to trick us from the very start since every experience we have of the world both within and without isn’t... “the thing in itself” but rather the end-result of filtering process which invariably colors whatever we see and hear and touch around us" (33). To simplify it, "we are under the spell of a cerebral mirage and to understand what consciousness is we must first come to grips with its beguiling and deceptive nature" (39). Extra Credit Response: I agree with what the book said in regarding to dreams. I think it is true that sometimes it's said that dreams have a greater importance than what they actually do. I've personally found that sometimes my dreams are directly correlated with what happened prior in the day. I think it's interesting how you used the NDE to show how the brain can trick us. Overall, the brain is just trying to help us any way it can in order to keep us alive. Week 4 Explain the Virtual Simulation Theory of Consciousness. The Virtual Simulation Theory of Consciousness is the mind's interpretation of what it perceives to be real, whether or not it actually is. Our minds give us a false sense of knowledge and certainty. (Cerebral Mirage, Pg. 5) An example of this could be our dreams. “Such delusions are our own dreams which we habitually take to be deeply real and rich with episodic narratives, except when we wake up and soon realize their wholly imaginative nature.” (Is the Universe an App? Pg. 101) Sometimes our brains can confuse us into believing that something is reality when in fact it is actually a delusion of sorts. How does the brain trick us and for what benefit is it for our genetic survival? “Natural selection will favour strategies that make many incorrect casual associates in order to establish those that are essential for survival and reproduction.” (Cerebral Mirage, Pg. 18) The brain can trick us into believing that something is real, even when it’s not, when it is needed for survival. The brain has a way of making us believe what it wants us to believe. According to the text, Cerebral Mirage, near death experiences can actually help in keeping someone alive and that regardless of the scenario that played out during that experience, it could suggest that the stress of dying can cause the consciousness to “elicit from a person’s memory those meaning systems or beliefs which were of the greatest concern so as to serve as a goading reminder about why one should want to live and not die.” (Cerebral Mirage, Pg. 21)

Week 5 1. Do you think artificial intelligence will be a significant problem in the future? I think that it will be a significant problem in the future because it will do mostly everything for humans. Humans are already relying on their technology to find information and to find their location and directions. (Digital Philosophy) I’ve seen people’s phone die and they rush and scramble to get their charger. If not dependent on it then they will surely be addicted to it. It will make humans dependent and lazy even more than a lot of us already are. AI’s might lead to some incredible discoveries and inventions but in the end it will just make humans more apathetic in the sense of knowledge. We will lose the ability to think for ourselves because the AI can do it all. The AI will have all kinds of information available in a split of a second because it has access to the “digital multiverse.” (Digital Philosophy, 13) This might even give the AI an edge over humans and lead to a world dominated by AI’s! (I think some people are already dominated by their technology.)
2. How has technology impacted your life? Technology has impacted my life in many positive and negative ways. One positive aspect to technology is that it has helped me complete courses online instead of dealing with lectures. Online courses make it so much easier for me since I don’t have to worry about driving to school, getting dressed or sitting in 3 hour lectures 3xs a week. I can complete the course all in the comfort of my own home and whenever I want. However, one way that it has impacted me negatively is that it is addicting. The same way technology can help me succeed is that same way that it will lead to my doom! When I feel too lazy to study I will procrastinate and go onto my phone and watch videos or go onto social media. Before I know it I have spent an hour on it instead of studying! It’s a big distraction. It’s also impacted me negatively because when I go and socialize with my friends they will spend most of the time on their phones. It has come to the point where people rather be on their phones than totally present in the moment. I love going camping and anywhere that technology can’t be around because it really bonds me closer with myself and those around me.
